Wise County Economic Profile
Wise County is located in the southwestern tip of Virginia in the midst of the Appalachian Mountains. The independent city of Norton is situated near the center of this predominantly rural community. The Kentucky state line forms the western boundary of Wise County. The community is within close proximity to the Interstate highway network allowing for easy access to both eastern and mid-western markets. US Highway 23 and US Highway 58 intersect in the County and provide convenient access to I26, I81, I75 and I77 making Wise County a premier location for commerce. An abundant natural resource base consisting of natural gas, coal, timber, and mineral deposits represents special opportunities for economic diversification.
Wise County provides state-of-the-art infrastructure, skilled labor and extensive training opportunities to serve its new and existing industry. The county is an ideal location for manufacturing or information technology-related companies. Sykes, Crutchfield and Mullican Flooring have already found success in the county, and parks such as the Lonesome Pine Regional Business and Technology Park offer an excellent location for your business. Aggressive incentive packages are available through the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority as well as other financing sources.
LENOWISCO Regional Small Business Recovery Assistance
The City of Norton, County of Lee, County of Scott, and County of Wise have jointly established a regional $1.6 million grant fund, known as the LENOWISCO Regional Small Business Recovery Assistance program, to support the district’s small and nonprofit business recovery efforts following the COVID-19 outbreak. One-time grants of up to $15,000 are being provided to eligible businesses within the district to offset business impacts during the pandemic. The grant program will be administered by the City of Norton, on behalf of its neighbor counties, under the oversight of a regional management team.
